127 Hours

The movie 127 Hours is based on a true story. The story is about a 28 year old mountain climber who has a love for the outdoors, adventure and just doing whatever he wants whenever he wants. His name is Aron Ralston. It all began when he travelled to Utah, and hiked in the Blue John Canyon. As always, Aron never tells anyone where he goes - just because the feeling of being alone and discovering places and himself felt spontanious. However, he made a mistake on this one. While hiking in the Blue John Canyon, something devestating and unexpected occurs - a 300 pound boulder crushed his right arm, pinning him against the canyon wall. This boulder became his worst enemy and also the only thing preventing him from escaping. For 5 days, or in this case 127 hours, Aron Ralston was stuck, with nothing, but water and some food, however those supplies were running out quickly. He assumed this was the end, and that he was going to die here and now. He began to make videos on his camera, leaving messages to his mom, dad and sister. He talked about how much he regrets not spending time with them and that he loves them dearly. However, although Aron wanted to give up, these messages to his family and memories from them was the key that gave him strength to fight his way out. The only way to get out of there was something most people would never have the strength and will power to do - he decided that he was going to amputate his arm. He then used his dull pocket knife to cut through his arm, and after days of agonizing pain from breaking his bones, cutting through his skin and veins, he was finally free. He got his second chance and he never gave up. At the end, he got rescued and his arm is now replaced with a prosthetic arm. Although Aron now has a fake arm, he doesn't let that affect his dreams, and love for the outdoors and still, to this day, he goes on adventures, climbs, and carries on with his life. This story is the most inspirational story I've ever come across. The difference between this story and other inspirational stories are.. well there aren't really any. However, the reason why this story stands out to me is the will to move on and the strength and influence family has on a person. This story is not about a guy getting stuck between a wall by a big rock - this story is about how important and how much of an impact your family, memories and life in general has on you. The fact that Aron Ralston was stuck in the worst position someone could be in, he didn't give up and he didn't want to die at that time, moment and place. He knew there was something more to live for and he went through extreme extents. Through his ordeal, his memories, flash backs and even minor visions are what caused his hope, will, power and strength. Anyone, even myself, would possibly never think to do what he did, because we're afraid of pain and suffering. And it's only normal that we feel that way, because we are only human. But, Aron Ralston proved what human beings are capable of doing - we don't realize this because we take life for granted sometimes and never test ourselves or push ourselves to the best of our abilities. Watching this movie, reading the true story, watching real footage from the accident, gradually made me admire and idolize Aron Ralton for his ambition and strength. I seriously loved this movie and James Franco, who played Aron Ralston did a phenominal job portraying his role. This movie teaches us a lot of things, but most importantly, it teaches us that "There is no force more powerful than the will to live." That's all.
