Who Are You
October 01, 2014You've heard of the saying "Who are you when no one is looking" and the connotation behind that is to be yourself and not have to put on an act in order to impress others or be liked.
Well, what if you pretended that you were being watched. Like you had a make-believe audience of some sort. You "act" as yourself and subconsciously pretend there are cameras filming you or you are aware that you pretend that people are filming and you act a certain way. Either or, you exaggerate your actions, talk to yourself; whether it's in the mirror or whilst you do errands. You exaggerate your facial expressions, are aware of your thoughts and actions. It's like you put on a show - just like the Truman Show.
What if who you are when no one is looking is someone you wish to be or someone you are when you're not around others. The simplest of activities are exaggerated and done in a way your character would do it. And you play more than one character, but those characters are versions of yourself.
This is not a form of dissociative personality disorder; however it is a way of emulating another character and taking yourself out of context, without being someone else.
Sounds complicating, yes. But I'm sure I'm not the only one who does this or think about these things. I watch a lot of films, observe and admire a lot of different characters, and sometimes I indulge in these characters and incorporate some of their characteristics in myself.
What if who you are behind closed doors is more than one person, but still yourself. This is where it gets complicated. If someone you knew were to assume you act different in public than with them in your room or house, they won't understand the way you function alone. They will only see the version of who they think you are, when you're with them, not when no one is looking.
Some may take on the idea of pretending there is an audience watching or a camera filming you do normal things, and some may not. I guess it's up to you, to make life a bit more interesting and bizarre.
Now this may not make any sense at all, being that it's difficult to articulate in writing or in speech, but I assure you it makes sense when you're in the act of it. I've been encompassing this idea, act, thing, whatever you want to call it, for years now and know I'm not the only one.
So.. who are you when no one is looking?
