The European Experience 2013: Amsterdam
August 14, 2013Day 3 & 4: Amsterdam
[July 7 - 8]
The following day, we went to Amsterdam! I'm really bad at remembering the hours/km we drove, so I'll tell you this right now: the most we've driven is about 8 hours and that was to Spain. This was the first official day on the tour and our wake up call that morning in London was at 4:00 am - I know, is that humanly possible? (Yes, yes it is). It was quite a struggle to get ready, but we still made it to the lobby where we were greeted by some friendly strangers, who happened to be on our tour! We got our breakfast goodie bags and met our lovely tour guide, Bernie (Who I didn't pay attention to at first, but now he's my absolutely favorite!). There were a few tours in the lobby and ours was one of the longest trip! We then got onto our coach bus and ate our breakfast and settled down. While we departed, our tour guide began his daily toury information chat where he introduced himself and as well talked a bit about London and where we are going and how long it would take. It took about 3 or so hours to get to the ship, where we would then ship off to Amsterdam - punny, I know. We took the Calais 8, which I didn't realize was the ship a lot of British YouTubers go on to travel places that cars are not able to. It was called the 'Spirit of France' and was so big and beautiful! I can't lie, I wish I could travel on that more often.
An hour or so later, we arrived in the Netherlands! We then met our oh so lovely Trafalgar bus, which we pretty much lived in for a month. This was the first bus ride with the whole tour and luckily, we got to sit at the back. Bernie then handed out our information package with everything and anything we need to know about the next few weeks. Prior to arriving in Amsterdam, my family and I had met this lovely Australian woman who my mother made friends with, and we chatted here and there with her during the bus ride. During the bus ride, Bernie talked a bit about the culture of Amsterdam and to everyone's discovery, we learned that 90% of people residing in Amsterdam owns a bike. Yup... pretty much every corner you see a bike rack filled with thousands of bikes. You rarely see cars! My first thought when arriving in the city of Amsterdam, besides "Holy crap, talk about dem bikes..." was how pretty the canals were.
We then arrived at our hotel, which was called the Ibis Amsterdam Airport (it was located near the airport..) and quickly got changed and headed out again to roam around/tour the city with our tour guide. The weather wasn't too hot, which wasn't such a good idea to wear a maxi skirt with a tank top. The first thing we did was go on a river cruise ride. It took about an hour and we saw a lot of buildings and beautiful canals. Bernie then took us around the city where we saw some beautiful buildings, canals and the occasional weed and sex shop... If you've never been to Amsterdam, or heard of it, then you would be in for a ride. Amsterdam is known for their very free spirited and open nature. You'd expect three things in Amsterdam: Weed, Sex shops, and more weed! It was definitely a culture shock for myself and family, however I appreciated the open nature they had and was glad to have visited Amsterdam nonetheless. Besides roaming around the buildings and streets of Amsterdam, we got to "observe", if you will, the infamous Red Light District. The Red Light District is a famous prostitute organization/building in Amsterdam - we saw lots and lots of half naked females by the windows, flaunting their half naked bodies and did not have one care in the world. Kudos to you! (I guess) Bernie led us in between the building where we got to be as close as to touch the windows and stare right into their souls!! Well, mostly stare in confusion and giggled here and there. It was...interesting, to say the least.
After that experience, we walked around a bit more with Bernie and shortly after, had our free time to roam around by ourselves. We passed by a couple of weed shops and a lot of souvenir stores (which had the most absurd key chains and souvenirs... of different sex positions and whatnot. Anything you can possibly imagine, they have it). We also stopped by this sex museum, which to my surprise, my mother wanted to visit. I was really fascinated with the paintings and sculptures of naked people and naked people in sex positions, and penis'! It was overwhelming but cool at the same time. We then proceeded to venture off where we visited a mall and other things. The evening came to an end and we boarded our bus to go back to our hotel.
The following day was our second day/night in Amsterdam, which also happened to be my 20th birthday! The plan for that day was to see how cheese and clogs were made. Yeah.. not what I would had liked to bring in my 20th, but the fact that I was in Amsterdam was awesome enough. We visited this quaint place in the middle of nowhere kind of, and the front of the building had clogs and cute animals. We then went into the cheese factory where a local talked about the process of cheese and how the Dutch make them. For the record, I for one, am a HUGE cheese lover. So you can imagine how excited I was (not really, I couldn't understand half the things she was saying). After the cheese demonstration, we then went into a room filled with clogs - EVERYWHERE! It was pretty awesome - we also had a local talk about the history of clogs and as well as demonstrated how to make a clog. It was actually pretty impressive and I even took a piece of the wood (that happened to flew by me) they used as a souvenir (cheeky). After the demonstration, we went into a souvenir room filled with more clogs! I ended up getting a bunch of mini clog key chains. After that, we hopped onto the bus where we were headed to a diamond store. But first, we stopped by this huge windmill where myself and others took photos of (Amsterdam is known for their massive windmills).
During the ride, our tour guide Bernie was doing his daily facts and information and also slipped in a mini announcement. He told the bus "Today is also someone's birthday..if you want to put your hand up.. (I forgot the rest). My mother had told Bernie while we were at the clog and cheese place, that today was my birthday, in hopes of him announcing it in the bus. And that he did! Unfortunately, I was not paying attention what so ever, and didn't realize he made the announcement until everyone was turning their heads and looking for who's birthday it was. I then stupidly said "Oh! Yeah, it's my birthday!", after my mother told me everyone is wishing you a happy birthday. The bus then began to sing happy birthday to me, some of them still not knowing who's birthday it was, and it was the sweetest thing ever. I then thanked everyone like I was 13 again and some people even individually wished me a happy birthday. I never felt so loved by strangers on my birthday and I was happy and felt grateful for this moment!
Soon after, we got to the diamond place where we were shown how people made diamonds and also the different types of diamonds and their 5 C's (or is it 4). Although it was cool to say how they made their diamonds, I wasn't too into it since I'm not a big jewelry or diamond girl (I know.. what a shame!) After the diamond demonstration, it was time to head back where we got free time to do whatever we please. Considering it was my birthday, I wanted to do something fun. I saw that there were art museums in town, such as Vincent Van Gogh (one of my favorite artists), however it didn't work out. We ended up walking around the city and exploring more and had some ice cream. It was pretty chill and nice, since I also saw a lot of cute guys (Amsterdam is filled with hot guys oh my god!!!). We then headed back to the hotel where I had a birthday dinner at a French restaurant in the hotel called L'estaminet. I had steak and fries (which tasted so delicious!) with a glass of red wine (I had a glass of wine almost every night. I love my wine!). Our waiter, who was so lovely, gave me a complimentary plate of desert, which I couldn't finish but so wanted to! (I think he was hitting on me *winky face*). We then ended off the night with a few laughs (thanks to my grandma and the wine) and a flirtatious gesture towards another waiter and headed off to pack for the next destination - Germany! I had a lovely birthday after all :)
