Professional Writing
September 23, 2011Well, I haven't written a blog in quite a while, my apologize. I've started University at York three weeks ago, and it's been quite an adventure and experience. My classes are pretty amazing and I haven't gotten a heavy work load as yet. However, in one of my classes, Professional Writing, I really enjoyed a mini assignment we had to do. It was during my second tutorial - my TA told us to walk around campus for 40 minutes and just write anything that comes to mind or inspires us. Well, I - being the jokingly and sarcastic person - pretty much pointed out anything and everything surrounding me, including trash cans, a brick wall and many other things. Of course I wasn't going to write about that, but what I did write was something special to me. We have a basketball court on our campus, and I always pass it everyday to go to class and the first thought that pops into my mind is a show. I decided, well why not write about this?! So I did. I sat on the bench in front of the Basketball court and wrote. I wrote about a show called 'One Tree Hill' - if you haven't seen it or heard of it before, you're truly missing out in life. Many people who know me, know that I highly enjoy One Tree Hill and religiously watch it. It's been a part of who I am and helped me through tough times that's for sure. I just had to write about it. So I put pen to paper and the words came out like water slipping on rocks. I wrote how sitting on the bench and watching this beauty made me feel and how much it reminds me of One Tree Hill. I described the show and the characters briefly then explained the symbolic meaning of the Basketball court. I was happy writing about something I love. For a while, I just stared at the court, picturing scenes from the show, where Lucas and Nathan Scott would play, and friends watching them enjoy the game they love. I then felt a bit sad. It made me wish I were there, to experience what they experienced. However that sadness didn't last long, because I realized how lucky and happy I am to have this Basketball court so it can make me feel, I guess at home. I felt like a little piece of what I love will always be there. After I completed my writing, I smiled. I knew that what I chose to write was perfect for me. This little assignment or activity you can call it, was the perfect start to writing. The chance to write whatever thoughts, ideas or imagination that consumes you felt good. I am glad I chose this course and I definitely cannot wait for the rest of the year.
