Life of Pi

December 06, 2012

I watched the film, Life of Pi today. For those of you who don’t know, Life of Pi is my favourite book. Like my absolute favourite book I've ever read, in the entire universe..of books. It isn't a book to me. It’s almost like my bible. It’s my prize possession. It’s my treasure. It’s my everything. Yeah, it is weird that someone can be that attached to a book? :/ I don’t care, I love it. Back to the film.

Ever since I saw the trailer for this film, like 7 months ago, back in the summer (wow, it was that long), I felt an immense excitement and was unbelievably ecstatic and anxious to watch it. Fast forward to now, I didn't realize how close it came and only found out today that it came out a month (November) ago. And I didn't pay attention to that at all. So, I am pretty disappointed that I am only seeing it now. That is besides the point.
When I first saw the trailer, I was pretty sceptical about it - it kind of looked a little bit animated and too unrealistic so I was unsure if it was going to be good or not. That being said, I didn't have high expectations. I just went in with an open mind, knowing full well that it is my favourite book I am about to watch come alive.
Let me just skip to the point. The film did the most amazing, astonishing, impeccable, pretty much perfect adaptation of the novel. I was SO incredibly impressed. As soon as the film began, I couldn't help but smile and get a little emotional because of the realization that someone, whether it be the director, producers or maybe even the author (who contributed a lot with the film) wanted to take this novel and make it into a film. They actually appreciated the novel so much - a novel that isn't as “popular” as some of the other novels out - but they made the decision to create a film out of it so they can present it to the world. It was so special to them that they put their time and money into it and said “Hey world, here’s a film you guys should watch that isn't like most films out there. It’s pretty good. Watch it.” Well, that’s my interpretation haha.
Because of them, I get to see my favourite novel with inspiring characters come alive on a big screen. That to me, is the most amazing thing. And to them, I say thank you.
Yeah…so that was my little cheesy explanation and me expressing my love and appreciation for both the novel and film. I hope you guys watch it. You won’t be disappointed.
